The app's general layout can add to that confusion - a practice mode that can be accessed from the section with Battle Deck options, for instance, offers settings that don't seem to be available in regular, real-time games, such as board sizes and game modes. There's no FAQ or other resource to help you brush up on the rules, so you could potentially get stuck and quit out of frustration. The game also has some bugs - card placements that should allow players to flip two opponent cards sometimes only work for one, for instance, and freezes can occur. Recognizing the different creatures can take time, and on a small screen, it can be hard to distinguish and quickly identify them. The additional advantages some cards offer in Creatures of Aether, for instance, can be challenging to figure out. This also opens the floor to the whole "games as a service" and "owning your games" debates, but those are cans of worms I'm definitely not qualified to open right now. This beast-themed card game offers more extensive initial instruction than many apps, but it's so detailed that some players may still be confused about how to start playing the game. Creature is entirely online server based that has to be maintained 24/7, compared to Rivals which has some offline features that don't need maintaining. The upkeep for a game like Creatures is different from A game like Rivals. Again, see point 1 for why using a preexisting player base to grow a new player base is a bad idea. So anyone who would have enjoyed Creatures won’t hear about it unless they are already a part of the Rivals player base. Frankly, it’s on par with giving a human grass to eat because “humans eat plants, right?" Don't expect people to like something just because its a "Thing of Aether"Īdvertising has been almost entirely word of mouth, that is to say, within the player base of Rivals. Rivals and Creatures are very different genres, so it’s no surprise that the amount of player base crossover is going to be very low. TLDR: Too much focus on the preexisting Rivals player base and not enough general public marketing At least we know the game isn't getting anything else for the future for sure now. I'm disappointed that we didn't get much of an insight into why some things ended up being the way they are, but oh well. If you are looking to play more amazing Tako Boy Studios games then make sure you wishlist their upcoming Cross Blitz on Steam right now!" It was a pleasure seeing many of you in masters matches on the ladder. Thank you to all the amazing fans who played Creatures of Aether. The game is now considered content complete, but you can still pick up the game and discuss it with new friends on the Creatures of Aether Discord. The game’s monthly Battle Passes will loop through the existing Rivals in the order that they were released. We will still support the game with fixes and keep the servers up as long as possible but we have no plans to add any additional content to Creatures of Aether. We have made the difficult decision to no longer continue active development into 2022. "Unfortunately, both Tako Boy and our teams have other projects to work on and we don’t have the resources to keep updating a free-to-play game especially at our player counts.
